Book Update: The Sketches Are Complete!
What an exciting milestone! I have received and approved all sketches, and the entire book is now ready for ink and colour.
That feels strange to say. Strange, but wildy exciting!
I’m a little overwhelmed and a little bit scared. But truthfully I am mostly just in disbelief.
This has been in the works for so long that I don’t think I ever really believed I would be standing here, holding a full set of sketches, but I am. And they are so good!
I’m putting that all down to Jon Kalvin. Jon took the words I wrote and turned them into something I never could have imagined on my own. What he has done is more than just illustrate a story. He’s created characters that feel real, moments that feel familiar, and details that I know adults will notice in a way kids won’t, which I love. He has layered humour into it in such a thoughtful and funny way.
It’s a strange feeling to see your own story told back to you like that. I love it.
I’m sharing one sketch now because I was honestly desperate to show you all something. But I’m holding most of it back, not to be secretive, mostly because I love how this is coming together and I really want to present it inked, coloured, and complete. I think that moment matters, and I don’t want to take away from it by sharing too much too early.
So here’s our story’s mom (in sketch). She has done the most F-Bomb worthy thing. She’s stepped on a Lego. And if you have ever done that, you just know.
This is where things start to feel very real. And if I’m being completely honest, it’s where I realize that I have absolutely no idea what I’m doing.
I’m figuring out the self-publishing side as I go. Every step feels new, and sometimes a little overwhelming. I’m curious about it, and I know that I’m probably going to make mistakes along the way. So I’m going to start documenting that here.
Not in a polished, expert way. Just honestly and authentically; it’s the only way that works for me. It will all be here. What works, what doesn’t, what I learn, and what I will do differently when I do it again. Full steam ahead, ADHD brain and all!
I’ll try to share updates every couple of weeks, or when something big happens, or when I get stuck and need feedback.
If you want to follow along more closely, you can join The F-Bomb Files. I’ll be sharing updates there as this moves forward.
More soon.
